Warning Out on Water Beads Which Can Block a Child’s Airway

11 May 2026, Quezon City. The EcoWaste Coalition, an environmental and health watchdog group, urged parents to avoid expandable water beads because they pose life-threatening suffocation risks to children.

Sold for P260 per kilo and P5 per packet, these superabsorbent multi-colored polymers can expand when exposed to water or bodily fluids. They are used to encourage young children to engage in sensory play activities, fill decorative jars and vases, and keep indoor plants hydrated. Water beads often lack basic product labeling and safety information.

The EcoWaste Coalition again drew attention to this potential threat to a child’s health following advisories issued by the UK's Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), warning consumers about the “high risk of asphyxiation” if expandable water beads are swallowed by a child. Such products, when "swallowed in (their) hydrated form, can block a child’s airway,” the OPSS warned.

To keep children safe from this serious health risk, the EcoWaste Coalition echoed these three key safety messages from the OPSS:

1. Water beads should be kept away from young children, under 5 years of age.
2. They should only be used by older children under the close supervision of an adult.
3. If you possess water beads, always store them out of sight and reach of children.

Health authorities in other countries have issued similar warnings to protect young children from life-threatening risks from the ingestion or misuse of expandable water beads, the EcoWaste Coalition said.

“Water beads can be very harmful if swallowed or put in the ears or nose. If ingested, water beads can continue to grow inside the body, leading to potentially life-threatening injuries, such as intestinal or bowel obstruction,” warned Health Canada.

“When swallowed, or put inside ears or noses, they can expand inside a child's body and cause intestinal obstruction, vomiting, severe discomfort, and dehydration. They may need to be surgically removed. Multiple surgeries may be needed to repair damage,” said the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). “Swallowing can cause lifelong health issues even after removal. Water beads can be difficult to identify with an X-ray and can cause infection if undetected.”

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported an estimated 6,300 water bead-related ingestion injuries were treated in emergency rooms in the USA from 2017 to 2022. One fatality was reported in 2023, a 10-month-old baby girl who died after ingesting a water bead.

Following years of advocacy by Consumer Reports and other children’s health and safety organizations in the US, a new Federal Safety Standard for Water Beads took effect on March 12, 2026, requiring “a maximum expansion size for water bead toys to prevent them from becoming large enough to cause blockages if ingested, and other injuries if inhaled or inserted into an ear or nose; limits on the amount of allowable acrylamide in the products in an effort to reduce toxicity risks; and strongly worded, visible warning labels to caution consumers.”

While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an advisory in 2025 on the safe use of sensory toys, such as clay, play dough, slime and kinetic sand, it has yet to issue a public health warning on water beads and related water-absorbing polymer toys as requested by the EcoWaste Coalition through a letter submitted in June 2021, following test buys it conducted in the City of Manila.
