MALABON MAYOR JEANNIE SANDOVAL VISITS DAMPALIT TSD FACILITY, EXPRESSES SUPPORT TO PCB WEEE PROJECT

19 February 2023. Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval was welcomed to the Dampalit Treatment, Storage, and Disposal (TSD) Facility– the country’s second-ever facility for e-waste management established under the UNIDO/DENR-EMB/GED project entitled, “Implementation of PCB Management Programs for Electric Cooperatives and Safe E-Waste Management.” The Dampalit TSD Facility was formally launched last March 1, 2022, in line with the celebration of International Waste Pickers Day.

It was established to protect the communities, especially waste pickers and traders, from the hazardous effects of improper e-waste handling. Since its inauguration, the TSD Facility has processed 3,578 Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) with 200 tons of tubes properly disposed of, trained over 300 waste dismantlers and collectors on proper e-waste management, and provided additional income and safe employment to waste workers in the community.

During the site visit that was organized by EcoWaste Coalition, Mayor Sandoval expressed her gratitude and support for the project, “the Dampalit TSD Facility is a welcoming development to the city of Malabon. Being the Chief Executive of this City, it is of utmost importance to stop the

illegal dismantling of e-waste among the barangays due to the health and environmental hazards these wastes contribute to our communities.”

The TSD Facility in Dampalit, Malabon is a product of the successful collaboration between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), UNIDO and the Global Environment Facility, GLOBE Telecom, Barangay Dampalit, and Ecowaste Coalition to ensure the Philippines’ compliance to the commitments under the Stockholm Convention.
